What's the "best" mp3 player for running?
Can't Post
My third 2nd generation iPod Shuffle died recently, assumedly from sweat getting inside at the headphone jack.
I was originally thinking of going to the current generation of Shuffle or Nano. But, the reviews seem to indicate that the new Shuffles really aren't that well-suited to running. And, the Nano is really a lot fancier (and more expensive, and bigger) than I need for running.
I'm mostly a turn-it-on-and-go guy. I don't need playlists or any of that jazz. I only put songs on it that I like, so I don't see the point.
What I want is something that is durable (ie. sweat won't kill it, tossing it on the counter won't kill it, etc.) and fairly small (but not at the expensive of durability). I'd also like something that will take normal headphones. And, if it'll clip to the back of my visor, that would be excellent, but not a necessity.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

I bought one of the new Nano's when they cam out. No issues whatsoever. Not sure what your price range is but the 8 GB Nano is only $150.

My favorite is the Sandisk Sansa Clip. It's small, comes in sizes from 1gb to 8gb, lets you select songs or just shuffle, BUT it's not overly complicated. Oh yeah, and it's CHEAP too! Go on ebay, you can probably find a 2gb one for like $35.

Sounds like you just need to find another old-skool Shuffle...

I second this! The clip is great because it is only slightly larger than a shuffle but has a screen so you can see what song you have playing and it also does am/fm radio. I have the 1gb model and it is plenty large enough for me. And its tough as nails I run with mine clipped to my waistband with the contrls and screen facing inward so it gets soaked from sweat and it is still going strong after 2 years. battery life is great aswell a little over 8 hrs I believe. The only thing I did was to super glue the clip that slids on and off the back of the unit. It clips in, but I didnt trust it so I put a drop of superglue and it is super sturdy now.

I really like the Creative Zen Stone. Standard USB small plug, standard headphone plug, better sound (I believe) than the Shuffle, and tiny/lightweight. Mine's about three years old. I don't run with it, but use it a lot on the exercise bike/trainer in winter which is a sweatfest.

Another vote for Sandisk Sansa Clip
Tiny, clips onto anything, durable, good battery life
and no ridiculous software or license agreements required to move music onto it. Just cut-n-paste.

I've killed 6 iPod shuffles from moisture. I found
this
Philips player last year and it's WAY better(and can handle the sweat)
It's smaller, has FM radio, 4gb, clip just as handy, drag and drop compatible, way better sound quality.

Nano or Shuffle - then go to iTUnes and get Podrunner.

Recently, I've been swimming with one of the SwimMan water-proof iPods and it works very well:
http://www.swimman.com/
You could one of these or have them waterproof yours and you've got one you can swim with and can sweat-on/rinse-off and will likley last much, much longer.

i don't mind spending money on new toys, but that seems a bit steep...

I have one of the previous generation shuffles that I clip to the bill of my running hat or visor rather than the back, so it's a bit further removed from my head/sweat. Seems to work fine. Light enough not to weigh the hat/visor down, and easy to reach up while i'm running if I need to adjust volume or want to skip/repeat a track.

How are you guys killing these with moisture? The city I live in gets more rain per year than anywhere else in North America, I wear it running and for other exercise all the time, and have had the same one for two years with no issues. I am using different headphones, can't stand then Apple ones, but I honestly can't think of how enough moisture could get inside it to kill it...

By moisture... I didn't mean rain or spilled milk.
I'm talking about that moisture stuff you make working out on a hot day(or also a cool one in my case).
You know... the kind that makes your shoes go squish during a long hot run and makes you wring out your socks.
It's the stuff you fill up the moat around your treadmill with to keep the walkers away....

Yes, I understand what moisture is, I have a dehunidifier running in my house 24/7 due to moisture. There is so much moisture here when it rains that even with a top end Gore-tex jacket, your clothes are soaked in about half an hour. If by "moisture", you really mean "sweat", I would have to wonder where you are clipping the Ipod on? As a lifelong athlete, I have been known to break a sweat a time or two. Maybe the headphones I use seal around the plug better, keeping moisture out. Or maybe I clip it on to my clothes in a different (better) spot, where moisture would have to travel against gravity to get inside. Who knows. All I can say for sure is that I am happy with mine, and have been for over two years now.
BTW, I like the moat comment. Haven't heard that before.

I've killed 4 shuffles by clipping them to my running shorts. I assume the sweat runs off my hair, down the cord straight into the ipod. Even though Apple replaces them for free it's a pain to drive to the store, wait to be seen, then more waiting while they determine it's dead, then replace it.

second gen shuffle. No issues. I always put it in my run pockets and string the cord under my shirt. I killed two headphones of a 3rd from sweat...the unit was awesome but there are no buttons and only work from the headphones....if the headphones go you cannot operate the unit...that sucks..I returned it and got my money back. Just kept using the second gen.

Just make sure you go with a mp3 with flash memory as opposed to larger capacity that have hard drives as they take even more abuse internally when running.

Another vote for Sansa clip. Just buy the 2gb version from amazon, there is a brand new for $40 then buy a microsd for the expansion slot. Get an 8gb card for $20-$30 and you have a 10gb tiny player for $70

It's $150, which I agree is a bit steep; but mine's lasted for years.

4th vote for the Clip. I "clip" it to the back of my hat and stuff my headphone cords inside my hat. Voila, no cords flopping around. My first one died after two years of sweat, so I replaced it with the same one (2gb) used from EBay for $22.

It never occured to me that apple would replace a dead shuffle. I discovered that mine died today - the day before NYC marathon and I found a last minute replacement from a friend. I'll make a trip to apple next week!
