Wheels for IM Cozumel! Can't Post

Hey All,

No disc allowed for IM Cozumel in four weeks, so here are my options:

- Set of 404s tubular
- Set of 808s clincher
- 404 front with 1080 rear tubular

Obviously, there is a lot of wind expected for the race. They've changed the course 3 times already. The bike now is 3 laps around most of the island. So I have an idea of what I want, but am curious what the group thinks is the right choice.

I just trade my 404 rear for a 808, so I have a 606 wheelset right now!

I`ll ride it in Coz with my new Kona Kit...

See ya there!

What do you think about running Hed3 wheels front and back?

I've been to Cozumel and all around the Island. I personally would use your 404/1080 combo. It was very windy both times I was there.

I got an email with updates from the race and some pro athlete related to the event recommended wheels with laced spokes over 3 spoke carbon wheels, I'm going more conservative with stinger 9/6

It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, when the sun comes up, you'd better start running.

From the first newsletter - "disc wheels will be strictly forbidden and the front wheel must be of spoke construction". If disc wheels aren't allowed, why do you suppose they specify the front wheel must have spokes? What else is there? Do you suppose a distinction is being made that prohibits a front Hed3?

If they say the front wheel must be spoke construction, that probably excludes hed3 and similar 3 and 4 spoke wheels (xentis, spinergy, nimble). They can be tough to control in gusty weather. Hed3 might be a great choice for the rear though.

I agree with Davey jones. 404/1080 is what I am running. Great job in Hawaii. See you in 4 weeks.

No it doesn't say forbidden! it just says that this pro athlete and the R.D. recommend laced spokes over carbon spokes because they are according to them "easier to handle" but they only said they recommend! What the second to last letter said was that disc wheel will be strictly forbidden.

So no they don't have anything against hed 3's or deep front wheels, they are just trying to make it safer for athletes that are not used to riding in heavy cross winds. Check the end of the Bike: 9am paragraph, it says "we suggest"

Thanks Brian. Loved the support during Kona. Can't wait to race with you in Coz - you're going to tear it up!

FWIW, I was planning 404 Front, 1080 Rear...
