Good for you, Dave. Sorry to hear about the layoff, but it looks like you're dealing with it well. Play hard, my friend.

I am just too busy enjoying my retirement, and helping others, to live on the internet anymore.

So is this guy. Oh wait, no, it's his wife that will be enjoying retirement.

Nice story Dave. Sorry to hear about HP reducing the scope of operations in Sacramento, but good to read the article and see how busy you are. Good luck to your family in their athletics.

The company I work for recently was purchased by our biggest competitor. Believe it or not for a tech company we were actually doing OK through the recession notching our 27th quarter of positive earnings....oh well. Anyway, you can imagine that with the overlap, a large chunk of my peers got the pink slip, which is really unfortunate. I guess they figured that I run the risk of going on the 30 hour per week training plan if I got a "package" so better to keep me and use my energy to grow their business, so for now I'm working :-). On the plus side, the mother ship is in San Jose, so more biz trips there....not sure if that means I can wangle out of some travel to Asia, but at least when I travel to SJC, I can rent a bike and keep up normal training :-). Maybe we'll hook up some time.

My best advice to anyone is at some point in a job, no matter how much you think they need you, out you will go. I am amazed how many folks lived a "fake" life. I had no idea so many lived on credit lines
and had no real assets.

San Jose is about 3 hours from me. I always have a guest room ready, and we have some great hills for training. You are always welcome to stop by.

Re: Where's H2ofun been? [h2ofun] [In reply to] Can't Post

Hey, I'm too cheap to actually live beyond my means. I'm in the no mortagage, no loans, no credit card balance group, living off "36 paycheques ago". Of course my cars are 17 and 10 years old respectively, and I'd rather stay at the Motel 8 or Days Inn than the Hilton and my idea of a good time is slapping my tent and sleeping bag on my bike and riding around Europe for 3 weeks living off $300 (OK, that was 1984, but you get the picture)....and I prefer to patch my tubes but draw the line of at manually repairing flatted tubulars. I'd rather eat in Subway than a fancy frech restaurant with $200 bottles of wine...heck, I can cloth an entire class of kids in India for that money....my stomach is not worth that much $$$ and can live off less....as for layoffs etcs, it happens constantly around me working in the tech sector. I've been laid off once and fired once over 21 years, and realistically both times it was not due to output, but because I was too f&*ing stubborn to get along with a manager with a different vision....now I push my own strategy only to a point and am more willing to accept that of my executives, assuming we aren't transgressing the line of business ethics, cause realistically in business, one strategy is usually as good as the next. Lots of guys way smarter than me with way more experience to learn from. Only 2 ways to get fired...no produce and not get along....gotta produce and get along....layoffs, well that is just part of industry and you can do everything to make the business positive and still get the axe like many of my colleagues last week.

Edit: Thanks for the offer for the free bed...if I am in SJC for work in the winter and want to stay over the weekend to get some XC skiiing in at Royal Gorge near Tahoe, then I would be glad to take you up on your offer and stop in Sacramento on the way up on on a Friday nite, or perhaps stop over on Sunday nite after a weekend of skiing and drive straight to SJC for work early Monday morning (probably the better option anyway....its a win win traffic avoidance scheme rather than trying to battle everyone on Friday evening leaving San Jose...)

You are one of the few who understand.

Us "locals" love to see the Bay Area folks fight in the winter to ski on the weekends. Weekdays are so much nicer.
