Yooper Triathlon (Half Ironman)
Can't Post
Planning your race schedule for next year? Interested in competing in what will be the
most beautiful long course triathlon in the Midwest
?
Then keep mid-August (Aug 15th) clear!
The Kuparisaari Triathlon will take place in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and will be half-ironman distance. There will be an inland lake swim, a challenging and beautiful bike course, and a scenic waterfront half marathon. Kuparisaari (pronounced koo-par-ee sorry) is Finnish for Copper Island (which is where the race will take place).
Websites: www.kuparitri.com, www.copperislandtri.com, and www.keweenawtri.com -- all will (eventually) lead you to our race site. We don't have the site up yet though. Keep checking back.
If you have any questions, PM me or email me: mlkillia@gmail.com

I was so hoping for one week later. Oh well, I'll see if we can't fit it in. Sounds like it could be a great race for those of us in the Upper Midwest.

Yeah, I know! I'm sorry. I hope you can fit it in. It would make for a great weekend, for sure!!
Unfortunately, the Great Deer Chase has always been the third Saturday in August (which would be Aug 21, 2010), and takes place in nearby Calumet. We were concerned about "double booking" an event for the area.

Please tell me there will be post-race pasties. Because with that location, you just have to.

Great to see someone getting something going UP there... I went to school at NMU a while back. I now live in FL but I've got half a mind to pop my HIM Cherry on this as my "reliving the glory years" destination race.
Inland lake swim? Watch out for the Muskies! Name is very distictive, but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. I'm sure "Copperman" got shot down early on in the planning, though?
Again, kudos for putting it together.. maybe in 2011 you can time it for the fall colors? THAT would be the most beautiful course in the midwest. Of course, the losing side of gambling on a late September - early October weekend might put the race in a snowstorm.

I'm only coming if food hand ups on the bike are exclusively of the pasty variety.

There is already a Copperman, a tri between a sprint and Oly distance. If you say it enough times, Kuparisaari is roll-off-the-tongueable, but I could be saying that because I've lived here for the last 10 years.
Ya know, There is so much desire to have it during colors but you hit the nail on the head with the unpredictability of weather. We had snow last weekend, and the winds really seem to pick up around here after Labor Day. We could go with something like "The most incredibly difficult half Ironman you've ever done" but... that might not bring in a whole lot of competitors :-D Hope to see you next year.

Hmmm...intriguing. That could be the perfect last race before IM Moo 2010. Also, since my last name is Raihala and I'm half Finnish, its almost like I have to sign up! Only thing to figure out would be the logistics of getting up there from Ohio...

There will be pasties, but they may be saved for after ther ace. Potatoes in aluminum foil, though... we can work on having that at bike feed zones.
And Spot, let me know if you have any questions about logistics for traveling from Ohio. Totally doable. I'm originally from Toledo and am currently down here to do the Columbus Marathon tomorrow. The drive isn't THAT bad... ;)

Lodging in the area is super cheap. I am sorting out a deal with a (VERY) nearby place that rents cabins that sleep 4 for about $65/night.

After all the talk about high entry fees and so on...
We have decided to run a deal for the Kuparisaari Triathlon. Register
on or before Nov 15, 2009,
and pay
only $60.
Registration must be done through mail-in or email. Contact me directly (PM me, or find the group on facebook/twitter) if you want me to send you a registration form. In order to get the $60 deal, mail-in registrations must be post-marked BY Nov 15th! Email registrations will be accepted until midnight EST on Nov 15th for the same deal.
The website is not yet up but will be launched oh-so-soon. If you're waiting for the website launch before you register (so you know that this thing is legit!), let me know. We can work out a deal.
