anyone able to take higher doses of Statins? Can't Post

Have combed through many of the posts on Statin use and checked out that study done in Austria about pro atheletes and their inability to take statins. I have, however, seen that some people are able to take what I believe to be lower dosages of statins. I have been on 10mg for Zocor for quite some time but it does not get the job done. Lipitor was a disaster for me 5+ years ago. Doctor asked me to try 20mg of Zocor but that did not make a material difference. He has now asked me to go 40mg and have done it for 4 days but may be having some side effects. Normal aches and pains are now worse than they should be in the off season. I was also very slow in the pool yesterday when I had been making a lot of progress recently. This stuff could be in my head I have to admit. Anyway, a long winded background but the question is, does anyone had success with higher level statin usage? Success is defined as maintaining performance, ability to do HIM distances, no new muscle pain and no increase in injuries.

I think I will give this 1 or 2 more days and then pull the plug on taking 40mg of Zocor. Also going to see a cardiologist to get an opinion on this as well. Primary doctor won't recognize that people that do sports may have a greater percentage of side effects with statins.

There is some indication that taking the enzyme CoQ10 (you can get it over the counter) can help improve or eliminate the muscle soreness type of side effects associated with statins. There is also a test that can be run to see if statins are not going to be effective for you. There are a certain percentage of the population that the statins do not work for, and other medications need to be utilized. I can't remember the test off hand, but as always, talk to your doctor....he/she should be able to figure it out. Maybe some of the docs will chime in with the exact name of the test.
