cant use my disc cover for 70.3 :( Can't Post

my disc cover from wb just arrived and i used it last weekend on a duathlon.

worked pretty well.

was plannin on using it in an upcoming 70.3 in our country.

only to read this...

http://www.ironman703phil.com/rules

7.4 Any unusual bicycle construction or equipment shall be illegal unless prior approval is received from the Head Referee before the equipment is used in the event. In determining the legality of any such unusual equipment the Head Referee shall follow the following guidelines:
  1. Equipment that is a prototype, modified or manufactured by a person or entity not whose products are not widely available for retail purchase shall be presumed to be unsafe; a
  2. Equipment that may provide a substantial competitive advantage and not widely available for retail purchase may not be used even if manufactured, invented or branded by an established bicycle or bicycle component company; and
  3. Tandems, recumbents, fairings, wheel covers or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduce resistance are prohibited. Solid or disc wheels are allowed.

just venting. sucks big time.

If nobody uses a disc cover it is a fair race. So don't complain and race your normal wheels.

That might be true . . . if they did not allow solid discs either. But they do.

That's BS. How do they define a wheel cover? Isn't the HED Jet disc a wheel cover that's been permanently fastened? So what's wrong with fastening a WB disc with screws and electric tape? What's the danger of riding with a wheel cover anyway? Sorry to vent, but that rule sounds so dumb.

Before jumping off the deep end, double-check with the race committee. It's suprising that will allow discs, but not a wheel cover.

I the US, discs and wheel covers are allowed at all races that I know of, as long as its on the rear wheel. The only one I've heard of that doesn't allow them is Kona, because of the winds (and maybe Honu - haven't checked that one out).

Based on that, it sounds like they could DQ a racer for clip-on aerobars too. Wheel covers are USAT legal, so I would bring it up on that basis.

Are USAT rules enforced overseas, or did I miss the memo that we annexed the Philippines?

HED says the covers on the disc are structural.

Seems like BS that they will allow discs but not wheelcovers. I would double check.

im goin to write em an email. puzzled as well as to why they'd allow a real disc but not a w.c.

because its a fairing?

what other arguments can i use for the w.c.? that its usat legal? what else?

If I'm not mistaken, wheel covers weren't allowed in time trials before 2009. The rule reads like the old cycling one.

To quote Will Ferral from Step Brother, "you're fucking high!" I'd take my Lightweight Disc over a disc cover any day of the week! 700 grams lighter, big difference! Stiffer than stiff too.

The HED disc is bonded on a spoked wheel. There was a guy on Slowtwitch marketing disc covers that could be permanently bonded onto any wheel. I wonder how those fit into this rule. What constitutes a bonded cover? It's BS. FYI - I own two disc covers.

Someone said above that a solid disc wheel is not as fast as a wheel cover. Is that true???

but is it as aerodynamic?

might not be =)

stiffness doesn't make things faster
it just makes them stiffer =)

rear wheel disc ALWAYS http://www.wheelbuilder.com if you are poor front wheel whatever torodial rim based wheel you want, or an H3. deeper if yer faster shallower if yer slower tires - http://www.biketechreview.com has crr data, use it frames - position trumps aero trumps weight trumps paintjob trumps stiffness water bottle between your arms or not at all if its a sprint swimget some swim lessons, its cheaper than buying bike speed train more and HTFU

Why would every pro tour team use an actual discs then? Astana did an independent test last year to pick out the best all around disk and tested everything under the sun, the result.... The Lightweight disc! I'm sure since they used their own money for the discs they could of got covers, right??? ;) save more than gieco could save you that way!

Yes the HED is, and the Lightweight is basically a spoked wheel with a cover also. The difference is that the manufacturer does it and they botyh claim that bonding the cover provides a structural (HED) or safety ( LW) advantage.

An after market cover obviously falls into the rule of adding something to a bike that is solely for an aero advantage.

I'm not happy with the rule, but thats the justification.

True, but the cover of the Lightweight is bonded into the spokes and is insanely cool to say the least. HED is not so impressive, although still cool.

"Equipment that is a prototype, modified or manufactured by a person or entity whose products are not widely available for retail purchase shall be presumed to be unsafe;"

So I guess that would mean that Chris Lieto would not be allowed to wear his racing flats in this race since they are prototypes and not yet on the market. Also a lot of triathletes have some form of minor modification to various things, I guess they'd be out too.

Most Pro's are on bikes not at retail shops either, so bias. This is worse than the UCI almost.
