cycling Wildcat Canyon in San Diego?
Can't Post
Tell me about it. I found a short cdescription on the UCSD cycling web site but am looking for more info. How are the roads? Enough shoulder to be relatively safe? Other issues? Thanks!

Wildcat Canyon used to be one of the classic San Diego county rides. But now the road is too congested with traffic to Barona Casino. The road has always been narrow, and I don't think it was ever widened (though I have not been out there for years). In fact I have seen numerous stories of head-on collisions between cars on that road.

We road this route yesterday. It's a nice route but nothing real special. The traffic is not too bad if you take the southbound direction. Most folks going to the casino head in Northbound and the initial climb is quite narrow with that much traffic (if you go that direction). IMO the worst section of the ride is San Vincente before you actually get to Wildcat Canyon. Quite a bit of fast moving traffic with little to no shoulder. Overall there's not really much to Wildcat, one main climb that's about it.

Of course it hurts. The trick is not minding it hurts.

Mike,
You have to do wildcat at least once. I prefer to head north on that road, starting at the bottom in lakeside and heading up towards barona. lots of shoulder up to the casino, then from there, hardly any to san vicente. heading up towards the casino always seemed better due to the hill and the cars tend to go slower...
From miramar, i would suggest, taking pomerado to scripps/poway parkway to the 67 and then head back to miramar. you could also take the 67 left towards ramona for a bit more climbing and turn around and head back. or turning right on the 67 heading to lakeside/santee, to the 52, and then back to miramar via kearny villa.
I lived in ramona until this past august, I now live on pomerado. I get all my biking in as a commute to point loma. one day a week, i take the long way home via the coast and 56...

I live on Point Loma now. I may try a weekend ride from home to Miramar and then Pomerado. Always looking for something new. I did a little of Pomerado and it seemed like a decent ride. It was a little busy at 5:00 pm. I wil most likely be riding it a lunch though, so it should be better.
Thanks for the tip on the 67. I will definitely try that route. I was wondering if it was rideable.

Someday, you have to try the highland valley road ride. Good place to start is at MCAS, take pomerado to highland valley road, highland valley to 67, 67 back to scripps/poway pkwy, to pomerado and back to MCAS.
67 is very ridable, especially on the weekends early morning.....

I just mapped that route on mapmyride.com and saved it to a gpx file for uploading to my Garmin. I'll do at least parts of it this week from work. THanks a bunch.

+1 on Highland Valley.
You can also ride out toward Fairbanks Ranch / Rancho Sante Fe. Riding along Camino Del Sur / San Diegito is quite nice... wide shoulders and smooth roads.
