re cabling a p2 Can't Post

Will be putting some new brake and gear cables in a mates P2 tomorrow. Any tips, tricks, online links etc. for me? Done the Google thing and the YouTube thing with no love there.

I assume you are talking housing, as cable removal and replacement is easy.

Strip bike down as much as possible, seal all holes and air leaks with masking tape, except for entry hole and exit hole. Place vacuum cleaner at exit hole and have someone hold it there while on. Place light string, or strong thread though entry hole and let it get sucked through frame. Now you should have string through frame and exiting the entry and exit holes for the cable. Tie old cable to string and pull through frame to replace string. Place housing over cable and push through frame. repeat

Interesting method, but not applicable in this case as the housings don't go through the frame on the P2.

To the OP, my recommendation is (since you are not familiar with the process) to take note of where each cable goes before disassembling, then use the old housings to cut the new ones to the right size. The only tricky cable to pass is the rear brake, as there is a wide opening for the cables that go through the downtube. So, for the rear brake cable I use tweezers and a flashlight to "fish" the cable and pull it out of the frame.. Hope that helps!

I just replaced the cables for each derailer on the p2c and used floss tied to the old cables and pulled it through and then attached the new cables to the other end of the floss

These guys are making it all too hard.

If the housing went all the way through the frame it would be easy:
1) pull old cables out
2) feed new cable through old housing
3) pull old housing out, leaving new cable
4) push new housing over new cable

But you have bare cable in the frame, so do this:
1) remove all sections of housing (unless they are in the middle say around the BB)
2) duct tape or packaging tape to tape new cable ends to old cable ends (you will have to cut old cables at levers and pull out the rear)
3) install new housing sections.

if the cable comes out near the BB then it's the same process repeated in 2 parts.

All of the above assumes that you've removed shifters/levers as necessary before beginning.

You're even making it too difficult. I've re-cabled my P2s and P3s quite a few times over the years. Run the cables into the frame at one end. Fish them out with a large bent paperclip (straighten it, then make a small hook at the end ... about like you'd get if you wrapped it around a pencil) where they're supposed to exit. It's really not hard at all. The only part that gets a bit tricky is getting the front derailleur cable back up into the seat tube and out the hole below the derailleur. That requires a bit more creativity.

yeah, first bike I ever cabled was a P3SL (same as P2)

you just stick the cables in the holes, they come out the right spot, and its obvious where everything goes

you can't lose!

Alternatively you can use a spoke with a bent end opposite the threaded end. Works perfect for P3. P2 is pretty much shaped to route the cables right out the bottom bracket opening.

Cervelo has pretty straightforward cable routing, much easier than some. As others have said just use a bent spoke, or a pick to remove the brake cable from the top tube and the derailleur cables from the downtube in front of the bottom bracket. If its a P2 rather than a P2C then sometimes I will remove the crank to make it easier to get that little housing loop into place.

Re: re cabling a p2 [iSwaz] [In reply to] Can't Post

The biggest head ache is trying to get the cable out of the frame. Sometimes it works on the first try and then other times, it just doesn't want to come out.

My solution it to put a little kink in the end of the cable (well... kink may be too much, but i really try to shape the cable a bit). When you thread the cable through to about the exit point, I just start turning (rotating) the cable and push it back and forth until it comes out at the other the end of the frame. Within a few seconds, the cable comes out on its own. No special tools needed.

Re: re cabling a p2 [beston] [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for all the replies. Does the p2 have internal cable guides? My tri bike has them and it makes it very easy to thread the cable along the top tube. I am guessing cervelo do not do this.
The floss thing is a great idea. I am going to use that one thanks. Would rAther spend a few more mins doing it right than just whippng the cable out and having to fish around for 20 mins trying to get it out.

Jackmott,

Looking at re doing my cables and housing on my 08'P3 w/ DA. I looked at the housing for the derailleurs and it says SP41 and I found that online but what do I need to use for the brake housing? Do you have a place where you order your housing from or can you point me in the right direction. I am stationed overseas so a LBS isn't an option. Also what is your recommendation on how often this should be done? Also I already have cables and just need new housing. I don't mind buying it in bulk, I think I noticed it in a 25ft roll, but then do you know where to get the end pieces that go where the housing enters the frame, mine are cut up at the ends. Also what about the crimps for the end? Thanks for all the help.
