Barkley 2024
#BM100 = trending

It's about that time of year. I always enjoy reading all the speculating on the twitters about start date/time.

Three finishers last year. That's gotta be embarrassing for Laz (joking. kinda?).

Does he come up with something creative to raise the difficulty level this year? A new/route? An additional climb? Eliminate the use of poles? Time trial start at 10 min increments?

Who are your favorites this year?

If you gave me on over/under of 1 finishers this year I would take the under because of the 3 last year. Thanks for the heads up this is starting up soon. Do we know who is lining up this year?

I didn't say it's starting soon. I (paraphrasing myself) said the twitterverse seems to think it is starting soon.

Everyone is free to announce they are making an attempt in advance, if they choose. Most do not. The start list is not revealed, even after the start. As I understand it, if you finish a lap, your name will be revealed. If you start the race, but don't get at least a lap in, there will be no mention of you at all, unless you want to out yourself.

Im guessing very few if any finishers.

Those who can did last year and will not repeat.
And then there is the weather, if it is bad it is impossible from the get go.

It looks like they might have pretty decent weather at least the first two days - sunny and low 60s as a high. There may be a little rain come in towards the 60 hour cut off.

I think there will be at least one finisher. There’s a couple of former finishers in the race, and Harvey, who won the backyard ultra last summer.

As most can tell, don't have the full field of starters (yet), but some big, big names on the list. https://docs.google.com/...kFn4QlJKEXMV/pubhtml

Each participant has to take all nutrition with them when they leave camp for the next loop. They also have to have water but there are a few water resupply stops out on the course. The "top of the hill" you saw was one of those water stops. Also, the "virgins" (never attempted The Barkley previously) tend to hook up with a veteran on each loop to help with navigation (the course is NOT marked). Find the documentary, The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats its Young, and it does a good job explaining some of this.

Following on from Camille's 6 Day, we're being treated to some quality vicarious ultra suffering.

Clarification please, Randmart. By "out on Loop 2", do you mean they have commenced Loop 2 or they have DNFed on Loop 2? I presume the former, but given it's Barkley, the latter is quite likely.

John Kelly, Jasmin Paris, Damian Hall, Sebastien Raichon, Ihor Verys, Greig Hamilton, Jared Campbell, Maxime Gaudin, Albert Herrero Casas, and Tomo Ihara have all started loop 3 as well. Thomas Dunkerbeck finished loop 2 but has yet to start 3.

Wikipedia says she is the 4th woman to complete the fun run, and the second to start a 4th loop. I believe if she completes the fun run this year she would be the first to complete it 3 times.

There are now 10 people on loop 4; the most in Barkley history. Considering the mild weather they’re getting it’s highly likely there will be a new record for loop 5 starts. It’s possible for the first time ever that 3 could start loop 5 at the same time meaning 2 of them could pair up.

From what (I think) I know, the first person to go on to Loop Five gets to pick their direction, then they alternate from then on, if there are more than one; so I'm guessing Campbell asked Jasmin which way she wanted to go (clockwise) and they left accordingly?

If my Googling of time zones is correct it is fast approaching 58 hours since the start so there is 2 hours left for anyone to finish. I wonder how many of the loop five starts will make the time cut? I can’t see myself doing much other than refreshing Twitter for the next two hours.

Jared Campbell just finished with 30 minutes to go. He started loop 5 at the same time as Jasmin, albeit in opposite directions. So perhaps she gets a finish.

Sebastian is still out there but would need a huge lap to make it, he started loop 5 with only 3 minutes to spare.

I surely hope that Jasmin's crew was filming; this is groundbreaking

Regarding that: I think that Laz once had a rule that no "recording devices" were allowed past the Yellow Gate, but we've seen more filmage from deep into the woods, at the Fire Tower, and the run back into camp

I'm guessing that it's not quite like surf videos where people get shat on for "exposing" "secret spots" or "private breaks"

I'm assuming the dry and relatively warm weather was a factor in the no. of finishers. It will be interesting to find out what the finishers thought. It has definitely been warmer than normal in Ohio the past month. Maybe he'll move it closer to the beginning of March.

IIRC, part of the reason for moving off of "Fool's Weekend" was because Laz is in prep for another jaunt across America, and it conflicted with his start date.

You had just about perfect weather for Barkley this year. Warm, but not hot; overnight temps bearable.

That's another thing; as far as I know, this "event" is completely unofficial & non-sanctioned by any org/federation

Laz can do whatever he wants, and can set whatever stipulations he chooses, as long as he doesn't intentionally endanger the participants (like when Spartan Races had flaming hay bales)

He also doesn't have to adhere to any "race calendar" - he could hold another one in September if he wanted to

****

One thing that occurred to me today: someone has to go out and HIDE those books, and make the map; is that Laz, himself, or does he have help?

He must be fuming that 5 finished this year when it had supposedly been made even harder than previous years.

It occurred to me that the start time was 5:17AM, meaning the finish time would be 5:17PM, two & a half days later

Allowing the Runners on the Final Loop to complete it during daylight

If he really wants to fuck with them, that's a place to start

Eveything will solve itself dont worry

Look at the finish times they get closer and closer to 60h why? Because the course is tougher each year, already this year he put in some extra nastyness.

This year had perfect weather, no fog, no rain, no snow etc. Same course next year different weather and noone finishes and suddenly the course need to be made easier again.
The two on lap five that did not complete must hate the.self, perfect weather is rare in that area!

Add six hours (up to 66 hours), add another lap (6). Make it 666.

.

Once, I was fast. But I got over it.
