So, here's a question: if a clever teacher makes a novel rainbow flag with a very slightly different layout than a conventional 'pride flag', can they still be sued? Since, technically, it's not a pride flag, it's just a multicolored piece of fabric or piece of paper. Because there is an infinite number of possible layouts of multi-colored logos.

Election tidbits. One trend of Tuesday's Super Tuesday primary day was losses across the state for right-wing candidates. The entire slate of Sumner County Constitutional Republicans — a group predicting big wins — lost an effort to take over the county school board.

In Wilson County, candidates backed by Moms For Liberty also lost, as did school board candidates in Chattanooga.

And in Williamson County, sitting Judge Erin Nations, who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Lee, lost in a blowout after accusing her opponent and successor, David Veile — a former police officer and defense attorney — of consorting with child rapists.

Whew. It's been a rough week for Nashville universities.

Let's start with Tennessee State University, the state's largest and only historically Black university. The legislature has been threatening for more than a year to strip all autonomy from the school and made good on the threat Thursday and with a blazing speed.

Less than six hours after the Republican-dominated House voted to dissolve TSU's board, Gov. Bill Lee signed the measure into law and rolled out his hand-picked board of directors. Contrast that to, for instance, Lee's failure to pass an extreme order of protection — which he claimed to want — after 2023's Covenant School mass shooting. Our point? Lee gets what he wants when he really wants it, so maybe we should assume his talk about gun safety was horse hockey.

Of course, it's politically easier in Tennessee to mistreat Black folks than to irritate gun owners.

Meanwhile, across town at an entirely different sort of institution, pricey and elite Vanderbilt University proved that having a hefty endowment doesn't necessarily come with brains. After a ham-fisted effort to defend their arrest of Nashville Scene reporter Eli Motycka for — checks notes — allegedly jiggling handles of locked doors, administrators released a statement Thursday that again threw shade on Motycka while offering that the university "will review" the week's actions.

Weak. Sauce.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A bill passed in the Tennessee House that would make it illegal to marry your first cousin in the state, but it did not pass without argument from one lawmaker who pushed an amendment to make it legal for cousins to marry each other if they first received genetic counseling.

The bill as amended by Rep. Gino Bulso, R-Brentwood, would prohibit first-cousin marriage unless the parties to the marriage contract received counseling from a genetic counselor licensed by the board of medical examiners. Bulso argued during a House floor session on Thursday the bill – as written – could violate the Obergefell v. Hodges U.S. Supreme Court decision, which made same-sex marriage legal across the country.

“I would move to table this amendment that would allow first cousins to marry,” Nashville Rep. John Ray Clemmons said.

The bill banning marriage between first cousins was later passed in the House.

Two Republican lawmakers, Bulso and Rep. Monty Fritts, who represents Kingston, Tennessee, were the only legislators to vote down the bill.

The bill now heads to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk to be signed.

House Bill 2041 was initially filed for introduction by Rep. Darren Jernigan, D-Old Hickory. Jernigan said marriage remains legal in Tennessee to this day due to a 1960 decision by Tennessee’s attorney general that marriage between first cousins did not violate a statute prohibiting marriage between relatives.

“I’m hoping in 2024 we can close this loophole,” Jernigan said.
