Grim.

I take an opposite view. What a great success! Actually put enough staff to test everyone and, behold, a clean finish (or more clean). Cheating by using any banned substance(s) would drop significantly if this was done at every “major” event and things would be much better for those tip-of-the-spear folks who don’t cheat. For me, it’ll make some difference, but I’m mop and it won’t affect me qualifying for Kona.

Not a coach. Not a FOP Tri/swimmer/biker/runner. Barely a MOP AGer.
But I'm learning and making progress.

Saw that. It's not the first time a headline like this has come out of the EU for amateur bike racing.

If you did that at an IM event/USAT Ag nationals or another big race, I bet you'd get an extra 10-15% increase in the DNF rate

Why take a doping test if you didn't place? Sit and wait in line for a test when you can just go home? All doping test should be done 30 min before the race

I know that amateur doping is a problem but more than 70% of the field dropped out of the race. That's just nuts.

What the hell is everyone taking? Good lordy.

The article I read on it said that the standard DNF rate for this event was pretty consistently around 50%, so the doping control potentially led to an additional 20% dropping out.

Natural 50 percent dnf rate is already seriously nuts even without doping!

Isn’t the idea “if I can’t be riding in the front group, I won’t bother finishing”?

Better still, set it up about 4 or 5 miles after the start. Neutralise that 2st bit. Corral everyone on the road. Leave and you get a lifetime ban. And test everyone. With no pre notice.
