I love rim brake bikes!

On the shoe, I mark on the sole where the "ball" of my foot is (I use the first metatarsal....just like those old Brannock devices the shoe stores used when we grew up). The Speedplay adapter plate has a center mark you can use to replicate how far apart they are (that addresses fore/aft). As for side-to-side and rotation, I note the placement of the 4 screws in the oval slots for the main cleat and match those. That should match the Q-factor for you and any rotation. Speedplays are pretty forgiving wrt rotation, but the constant. mild centering pressure can be annoying if it's too far off.

Basically what Titanflexr wrote, but the expanded edition.

- mark the position of the first *and fifth* met heds on the outside of your current shoe.
- draw a line connecting those dots *across* the cleat with a sharpie or paint pen.
- place new cleat on top of old cleat on old shoes, trace the line across the new cleat.
- mark the center of this line on cleat. Not the center of cleat, the center of the line.
- draw the same line and center point on the new shoes, sans cleats.
- install new cleats on new shoes in position indicated by line/center point.
