A Bike Need, Fentanyl, Meth, & Abuse | Part Lavender Room, Part Triathlon, Part Classified

Does anyone have a road bike or fast TT bike(s) that Michelle Howe (my wife) can borrow for US Pro Nationals in mid-May? Sponsor? Loaner? Steeply discounted used? Combo?

Her goal is podium in TT, RR, and/or Criterium. Bike sizes 54-56 will probably work. She's 5-9.

TLDR: Wildest of unforeseen circumstances (it involves cartel) mean we can't afford buying fast bikes - even used - right now. That might change overnight if we find the right investor(s), but right now, no.

Resource-intensive and extreme opportunity cost, 2023 was an epic challenge, previously unimaginable to us. Harrowing. Life-altering. Hard. Just hard.

---- Longer info below ----
Reason we’re asking: We started a startup and "rescued" a child from a drug trafficking (read: meth, fentanyl, manipulative gaslighting, money laundering, the whole nine yards) & abuse situation that we couldn't un-see. Investigative, legal, a psychological costs were large. We stopped working for almost 6 months. We're now broke and the debt from finishing up the legal battles and psychology care costs continues to accumulate. Michelle meanwhile had a long string of injuries, fought hard emotionally, and is coming back stronger and fitter than ever. Total tangible costs approach $100k. Opportunity cost from ceased work exceeds another $100k. (We didn't have $200k to begin with).

Her most recent results are 5th in the 2021 US Pro TT, detailed far below, and a victory in her first race post-injury @ Austin Rattler MTB60 in Nov-2023.

Conclusion. We could use a little help if you’ve got a bike or connections. We appreciate you sharing this with anyone you think might be interested in coming alongside us. We are willing to think outside the box. It’s just not wise or prudent for us to spend big on new bikes this year. She's fitter than ever and US Pro's matters a lot to her and I can't stomach her going and not getting a podium spot because she's on ancient beat up bikes. (a 2013 and a 2018, mechanical with 40k miles on it)

PS. Happy to share more info if you’d like to know the (very long) back-story, but I deleted the 1600-word essay. It needs to be more of a book. Let's just say, getting a kid out of a trailer where they use and traffic meth and fentanyl is ... complicated, involved, and resource-intensive. We're glad it's almost over. Final trial is 2 weeks after nationals.

PPS. We have social media followings and can post / promote things, but mostly we're just grateful to borrow a bike if someone's got it. Just for assessment of Michelle's 'potential' as she returns to competition, here are the women she competed against, in case you're a capitalist like us and need a little incentive. 2021 US Pro Nationals Time Trial Results below. She was on an 8-year old bike with a wild-guess night-before bike fit.
  1. Chloe Dygert - (WR, 12x World Champ, 2x Oly Medalist)
  2. Amber Neben - (3x World Champ, 3x Olympian, 4x Pan Am TT Champ)
  3. Leah Thomas - (Nat'l TT Champ, Olympian)
  4. Tayler Wiles - (3x Nat’l TT & RR podium, Redlands champ, long-time pro)
  5. Michelle Howe
  6. Emily Newsom - (3-time top 6 at Nat'l TT Champs, long-time pro)
  7. Lauren De Crescenzo - (Unbound 200 Champ, 2x Gravel Worlds Champ, gravel famous)
  8. Veronica Ewers - (2x Nat’l medalist, 4-year Pro, in part because Michelle helped her podium in 2021)
  9. Lily Williams - (1x World Champ, 1x Olympic Medalist)

I forgot to mention: we are now that child's guardians. Have been since September.

She turned 16 four months ago and is driving now. Like I said. Harrowing. ;) (honestly, her driving isn't scary compared to all that we've all been through the last year. She does awesome.)

I probably can't help but I'll send you a DM with what I have.

Slowtwitchers ... isn't there some place we can rent and ship her the latest and greatest super bike? I'd be willing to contribute quite a bit just for the help Dr. A has been on this forum and his youtube channel not to mention helping out someone who protects the least of these.

Just chiming in for the TT bike - the Pro National TT will be under full UCI equipment rules. No Felt IAs, etc.

(So will the road bike for that matter, but that's a rarer issue to run into problems with).

On that note, an avenue to consider might be to approach a roadie team, and have that team support her with equipment. DNA Pro Cycling is one, in particular, that seems to accept strong riders as stagiares from outside the normal youth cycling progression.

The one caveat is if a team supports her and she's wearing their kit, the etiquette is to follow the team plan in the RR/crit vs. racing purely for herself. Of course the TT is always fair game.

Disclaimer: As I told one of several folks who have offered bikes, it feels pretty 'icky' to be asking for such an enormous hand up/out. She could totally race on her bikes. I just don't think that podium is nearly as likely as if she's got a newer ride, even if the 2013 P5 was a generational leap in TT bike aero.

The bikes she currently has:

TT Bike
2013 56(?) Cervelo P5 with Zipp Super 9 (cracked) & 808 NSW, rim brake, di2, ultegra-DA mix. ~10,000 miles on it. (I can and will optimize the heck out of this again if I need to, of course.)

Road
2018 Cervelo S5 808 NSW front & rear (or 404 firecrest front), rim brake, mechanical, ultegra-DA mix. It has ~40,000 miles on it. Beat to heck and back. Even with full tune, it's sketchy.

So, SO grateful to you all. Can't emphasize how 'ick' this feels; a case of "beggars" (me, not her) being "choosers." I would just love to see her aboard a bike that aligns with what her peers are on. (internally routed, di2, 12sp, not beat up from a decade of use). Ugh...this whole thing makes me uncomfortable and I'm just tremendously grateful for you all helping locate something.

So I can't help with a bike or parts, but if there's some top end machine someone is able to get to Michelle I will gladly contribute to any costs involved in getting it to her. Just let me know where to send the money.

If we can make paths cross, I am more than happy to contribute my time aero testing her.

I would contend that marcags offer is the most valuable contribution you could get. The only thing holding back the current bike is the bars. I won't have anything useful on that front ready in your timeframe unfortunately.

And good on you for helping when you saw a need.

Wow what an experience! You and I have been going back and forth via email regarding nutrition and so far it has bee a great experience for me. I LOVE the Saturday app and every athlete should have a personal nutritionist which is exactly how the app works. I can’t wait to use it in my next race! I sent you an email but wanted to come on this forum and express my gratitude to you in taking time to help ME while you are in the midst of your own crisis. Amazing! I wish your wife success in her training and racing and to both of you on your Saturday App. This girl needs and deserves a bike.

So just to clarify Alex, this story is about you and Michelle? Michelle is your partner??

You should not feel icky for doing what you have done in terms of asking for help etc. You both have done an amazing thing rescuing this child from the environment they were in, at great financial (and I am sure other) costs to you both.

I am Australian based so can't offer much in terms of support equipment wise but I would happily donate funds to be used however is seen fit.

With the contacts amongst this community I would hope we could set Michelle up to give things her best ever shot.

Correct, Michelle is my wife of almost 9 years, co-guardian with me (8 months), and cofounder of the startup we run (2.5 years since founding, 1 year since launch). She was my college teammate and colleague back in undergrad and we’ve been best friends for about 15 years. (It just took me a few years to convince her that she wanted to elevate that best friend title to spouse. ;) )

We moved to the meth capital of the world to do it: Granite Falls WA, which is worse than we imagined, so yes, there have been a few other things given up. Good awareness there. ;)

Thanks Alex, maybe put that Michelle is your wife in the opening sentence? I know most people will read on anyway but it makes it clearer and also more likely I think for people to want to help!

I know there may well be privacy issues etc which prevent you from telling the full back story about how you found yourself in this situation of meeting this girl in the environment she was in, and then how you set about extracting her from that and obtaining guardianship. I for one would love to read the 1600 word essay, I think it’s amazing what you have done and the dedication and personal sacrifices you have gone through to get there. I know the financial hit is massive, but I can only imagine the emotional, psychological and other impacts this has had on you both.

Changing topics a little, can you access any funding now to support her and the care that she may need to adjust into a normal life? Are you planning on staying in the area where she was being brought up or will you try and put some distance between you and them?

Also, as I am sure you are no doubt aware, this being a public forum and all you should be careful about what details you post etc. (ie probably should ignore my questions above!!) Just in case.

No access to funding for the case.

I’ll refrain from answering the rest until we eradicate the risk by winning at trial on June 18, assuming that date holds.

The 1600 word essay was my ultra-streamlined version and I have hundreds of pages of documentation and personal notes and several thousand pages of court records that will make for a killer book or motion picture or TV series someday. The three parties in our household agree. :)

We’ll eventually work with a professional author or screenwriter, in case anyone wants to send that our way too. It might be a couple years until we have bandwidth though!

If you’ve watched the show Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and the movie Instant Family, then you’ve seen most of our movie.

Thanks Alex,
My day job (and night job) is as a sub-specialist obstetric anesthesiologist (to use USA terminology, down under we are anaesthetists).
My hospital is our state women's referral hospital and this means we take all the complex medical, surgical, psychiatric and social cases from throughout the state. This includes a busy drug and alcohol pregnancy service. In my close to two decades there I have to say I have pretty much seen it all, a bit like you talk about/infer above. We have a massive team that work in front of and behind the scenes to keep these newborns safe, including mechanisms to uplift babies immediately post delivery and all sorts of lock down procedures for the hospital in case of abduction etc.
So I guess, just trying to say, I can picture a lot of this in terms of what you have seen and been through!!

Question for you, if you can answer, did you come across this situation by parking your RV in the "wrong" spot.....is it travelling in the RV that led these worlds to collide?? I am intrigued at how you all met and how you came to be a sanctuary for this girl, how your worlds collided etc, it sounds like it would be fascinating!

PS: loved the Gatorade video thats live now!

Cheers and best of luck!
