IM Chattanooga race day thread
well, the gun fires in under an hour. since there seems to be some higher-than-usual interest in this one, i thought a race-day banter thread was a good idea.

so far, the forecasts look great - sensible temperatures and very little wind.

enjoy!

mcbride moving to pass moench. sharing the work?

not getting any splits on the men's chase, but from the camera angles it looks like hoff and beals have managed to build a solid gap.

OK, lead three are out in 42:14 - that's hoff, beals, and vinhal.

sanders/long/skipper out side by side at 1:24 back.

42 min IM swims should not be a thing. That current sure did put Sanders and Long in excellent position. And, umm, a little help here on this Vinhal guy.

yes, but: he actually put heaps of time on the others in transition! 11 seconds on vinhal and almost 30 on hoff! i mean, you don't watch ironman for the transitions, i guess. . .

skipper and long have closed the gap; skipper now in front. skipper, bless him, did a big goofy 'yo yo yo' to the camera as he passed long.

no sign of lionel?

Lionel said he was going to race his own race in the latest video, so I could see him letting Sam and Joe go early. But he might regret that later if he's having to work by himself all day and the lead group has motos all around them. These roads are narrow (so far) and there's not much room for the motos to spread out, which is problematic when there's a long train.

Possibly chillin and biding his time for a faster run.

Early days.

I have not had a chance to check the feed yet. How far are the gaps between Cody, Sam and Lionel?

We don't know what's going on. Cody and Ben were out front on the swim then Sam and Joe caught them within 10 miles. Sanders was not there, he's somewhere farther back. There is no timing mat unitl 32 miles where we will get some info.

I just heard that Joe missed a turn and went from being the leader to now being in 4th

Footage just now confirms it. Hoffman getting massive benefit from moto sitting between him and Beals. They need to get the motos out from in-between the front pack riders.

I just got on the FB feed and the moto looked suspect. As Monty used to say it is not the athlete problem if the moto cannot drive sufficiently fast. Ironman has to get the motos further up the road

Yeh motos are a problem.

Lionel's tactics are starting to puzzle. Even at this early stage 3mins down is too much. The commentators need to start calling this for what it is.

Sam Long show I think.

So, how will we react when Cody beats Lionel, Cody being a DTD coached athlete and Lionel saying his training under DTD was trash!

But yeah Motos seem to always ruin things
