Ipad for Zwift
I am trying to decide which ipad is enough to run zwift.
Do not need the fanciest one but I would like to make sure it runs smoothly and has enough storage.
My laptop has gone kaput.

I run Zwift on a 6th gen iPad (circa 2018) without any issues.

Any version with an A12 chip will work fine. Another option, for shear plug and play simplicity and low cost is AppleTV. I've access to a wide range of computers and I still use AppleTV as my daily driver. It just works.

How much storage would be necessary?

Minimal. For AppleTV, the base level storage is fine. For iPad, 32gb or better. This is assuming that you're mostly using the device for Zwift. If you plan on using tablet for other stuff and will be storing media, then go with the most that you can afford. Outside of the Apple world, memory is a cheap enough commodity that it's generally good to go with as much as you can. Apple, though, charges a huge premium for slight increases in memory.

Is the A13 to A14 chip difference that huge? For processing etc

Nothing of significance.

I run it on a gen 9 iPad. It's a much better experience than running on a laptop - for one thing you don't need to run the companion app.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

How many GB did you go with for storage?

64Gb. Zwift takes up about 1.2GB.

I can/do run Zwift on an iphone XR from 2019 (lightning->hdmi cable to an old 27" monitor).

Mostly I run it on an old low-spec PC, but the iphone works fine too.

I use an ipad air 3rd generation. It works great with Zwift.

Zwift will run fine on later model iPads. That's what I use.

The obvious sacrifice is with graphics as the iPad can't do what a gaming computer can do but if you weren't running a gaming pc/laptop to begin with you might not notice it much.

I used to run Zwift on a gaming PC with a nice monitor but spent the whole time watching Netflix or whatever on the TV in front of me and hardly paid attention to the Zwift monitor. The graphics with the iPad are nowhere near as nice but I realized I couldn't care less.

Ipad definitely the way to go. I don't get why people have massive Zwift Tv's. Id rather watch the game and keep Zwift compact.

Hi,

I use an iPad but even with it plugged in to a usb port the battery only last 3 hours on zwift.
That’s about my max tolerance anyway but a few rides it gets down to 5%.

I think it is a iPad Pro model 1791 , a few years old.

Anyone else here that can report their battery time?
Is there any settings to turn off that would help?

Yeah sounds about right, my iPad uses approximately 30% battery per hour.

As others have already mentioned, the iPad is super easy and practical for Zwift (or Apple TV if you prefer the big screen experience).

I started out using an old (2012) MacBook. That worked quite well until Zwift updates made it lag and the frame rate dropped to single digits. Since then I’ve “borrowed” my wife’s iPad Pro (2nd Gen) and it’s great. Yes, you’ll get better graphics on a gaming PC but I don’t need that.
I’ve also tried to run it on my own iPad Mini (Gen 2) when travelling, but that just laughed at me.

No one mentioned it, but you do not HAVE to use an apple product.
I've been using a Xiaomi pad 6, perfectly fine.

Curious - how long can you run zwift on your newer ipad with battery only? Or is it short enough that you pretty much leave it plugged in?

I’ve only ever risked short rides, usually I plug in.
I’ll be on this afternoon though, so will do an experiment to see how long I get unplugged.

Do you run anything else on your ipad while zwifting? Like music etc?

So, I forgot until half an hour in, but once unplugged it proceeded to use 40% battery for the remaining 65 mins of Zwift.

No, if I’m racing (TTT) I’ll have a group call on my phone. If just riding solo I’ll have netflix on Apple TV separately.
