Big cap (the equivalent of big pharma or big mushroom) have probably influenced this
please link it though, Iām curious as everyone does wear them during pool races.
But All the fast kids in my very first squad, even with a kid who beat a Thorpe age group record, never wore them at practice and had grey and brittle hair

Girl perspective: cap helps keep long hair out of face I think??? Suppose I could try to swim wo one and see if Big Cap has convinced me of this .

The capitalisation of Big Cap made me lol
For ladies and those with long hair, it does make sense. though many men are basically losing a battle with time to keep hair
just playing around with getting my stroke longer now and really pushing my body and head down into the water to glide on the right arm. want to get a video of it soon before i go down the rabbit hole. showing good progress on the clock with it but want to see what it looks like. when i sink my head i can really feel it popping up and still trying to get that one goggle breath
still getting over my cold - swimming at reduced time and effort
at around 30-32 strokes per lap when doing 50s stroke count with this new technique and getting to 12-13 per 100 pace lcm at hard efforts which is an improvement in progress . i don't countr strokes when doing hard swimming. if i can get under 30 i know i am in the really good company

What I have noticed in a few swimmers particularly distance male swimmers with more of a glide and catch up is that they put their whole head under the water, so their body is like in a semi streamline (only one arm in front) and they can reduce drag as much as possible
The first to do this most obviously was sun yang, then romanchuk and now a few Chinese swimmers plus Dan wiffen to do it
Li bingjie keeps her head very ow but doesnāt submerge it
It seems a new thing they are doing, related possibly to reducing drag and taking a very shallow and quick breath technique

spent time yesterday watching you tube videos and races from mack horton, david mckeon and sun yang (all big dps swimmers). I even counted some of david mckeon's strokes at 26-27 strokes per lap.
got in today coughing up a lung
hard swimming
on 1:30s
5x100 5 x 150 (last 3 hold 144s)
50 easy
10x100 (109s)
200 easy 4x200 on 2:45 desc 1-4, but descending by increasing stroke length (235,234,232,228)
200 easy
200 long stroke (228)
200 easy
200 increase tempo (226)

I hope you feel better. I took yesterday off- had thought at the week start I would swim 6x but my body felt tired sat. Good choice as was fast today.
3200 free, 500 kick, 1.84 mi jog as part of jog walk, about the same distance walking
12 x 50 on 55
7 x (25 kick, 100 fast) first 5 1:12 last two 1:13
25 kick
100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 sw w 25 kick after each
3 x 50 on 45 cd
Kicked a little more
I am doing a better job of Head Down on the fast stuff, still some room for improvement. Lots of room for improvement on holding the new technique on the longer stuff. I was tired when I got to those - havenāt done longer stuff like that in a bit. One goal for this week is a fast set of 5x100 with some in 1:11 or under; another is some fast 200s; and a final planned workout is some 300s-500s that are technically good.

This thread has caused me to work on head-down, and seeing my strokes. Thank you, Slowtwitch.
Last week saw my first "sixer" of the year. (Six sessions in a week.) In fact, I swam 10 out of 11 days, in an effort to rebound from a lazyass start to Feb.
I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k.)
I never did Triathlon. (Sue me.)

āSee your hands under your bodyā is still the most useful cue for me in terms of head position and pull, I have decided
Super sore from yesterdayās shoulder PT but made a 1:11 this AM. Busy pool for a bit hence all the 50s, was in a lane that has stairs that make turn at that end hard
3200 free and about 800 kick
3 x (12 x 50 on 55, 50 kick)
6 x 50 on 55
5 x (25 kick, 100 fast) 1:11, 12, 13, 13, 13
*aborted a 100 mid set after 25 bc messed up the breathing, so a 25 swim 25 kick after the 2nd fast 100
Something like this to cool down:
2 x 100 easy
25 swim
4 x 50 easy
I know it was 3200 just donāt recall what the other east 200 was
600 kick

TI was my first swimbook. I remember loving the early chapters, but then it got a bit too hippie-dippie (is that a word?) for me. I'm very into Swimming Fastest and The Science Of Swimming Faster.
I only swim.

I have not read the books but Iāve skimmed some chapters online and also watched the videos
What did you like about it ?
I think he has some great messages - he is empowering and kind of poses a bit of a hippie dippie question around , what is a good swimmer? someone who has a smooth stroke and enjoys the water and working on things to improve their stroke or someone winning the races. It just changes the mindset
Obviously his market is triathletes as they are a cashed up group but life long swimmers and adult swimmers who want a new hobby and making friends through swimming is another by product audience??
Plus the idea that removing drag is the primary way to look at getting faster
To Monty - when you do not swim do you do any swim dry land? Do you thrash the elastics around?
5.2 today
1k warm up mix of easy backstroke and some easy freestyle drills
10x200 on 2:45 first 8 average 225s then 220 and 216 last two.
Snorkel easy long strokes 400 400 200
1k as 6x100 on 1:20 400 on 5
4x50 easy
Some bands and medicine ball and throwing weights around for 10-20 minutes

Use to, but not anymore. But do have to preface that at your age you can get away with a lot more, as I did in my 30's. But I also did damage to my heart in my 30's too, training in the high zones while sick. I mean we all have worked our way through colds and such, with no problems. But in the big picture, are you really advancing your fitness training while sick? For some the answer might be yes, but I figure not worth the risks. I wish I had been told that at your age, and of course listened to that advice. Now I live with those consequences for the rest of my life, but it could have been worse, much worse.
I think if you keep your HR very low during these periods you are probably good to go. My issues were either racing or training at racing paces that did me in while sick. In my you would show up to the pool coughing and dripping snot all over with a fever, and coach would tell you to just tough it out. That was a pretty universal thought process too, times have changed, but some people have not...
Man the pool today was really hot, so I just opted to grind out a big set of 40x100's of mixed stuff, with a kick in there to help cool off:
8x(3x100buoy or pull@1;40/100IM@2;00/100frog@2;00) buoys(1;28 to 1;23)pulls(1;20 to 1;18's)frogs(1;55 to 1;52's)IM's(1;32/30/28/26/25/26/26/extra 30 sec/1;24)

8x(3x100buoy or pull@1;40/100IM@2;00/100frog@2;00) buoys(1;28 to 1;23)pulls(1;20 to 1;18's)frogs(1;55 to 1;52's)IM's(1;32/30/28/26/25/26/26/extra 30 sec/1;24)
3x50buoy@1;00(43/41/40)50kick
4200SCY in 77 minutes

Thatās really good advice. Thank you.
I took about four weeks when I got covid where I swam maybe 2 or 3 times for just 20 minutes just wanted to get that cleansing feeling of being in the pool. But I wouldnāt really even call it swimming. Just floating real slow
But for any colds I have had since then Iāve taken a few days and come back fine
I am now clearing out the mucus and just have the lingering cough. Iām feeling good and while I could have a few days off I will be able to work through the rest of the cough just over next week or two and do reduced training amount and reduced hard sets
Thanks for the advice - reading posts like this from someone like yourself helps put stuff in perspective. I know youāve written about taking long long breaks due to chronic fatigue and viral issues and the like
A friend of mine raced after she got covid on that weekend and her heart did some crazy stuff during the race. She had to get medical right afterwards. She is maybe 21. I was like - what were you thinkingā¦
We used to train through colds when we were kids but it I remember correctly they would usually pass within a day or two. Slower to pass now
I donāt think we ever trained through fever. We werenāt that smart but we were also not that stupid

I have to say I like TI's philosophy about fins/paddles/boards - even though I acknowledge that the best swimmers here and everywhere use them, so who am I (and Terry) to opine in such a way?
But for me - those things lasted one week - before I got TI. Terry speaks to me on that subject!
I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k.)
I never did Triathlon. (Sue me.)

Finally back in the pool after some colorado skiing w the kiddos and wife.
loved the break but coming back is always interesting.
ITs helpful to have the altitude in my lungs.
Yesterday was 4700 total (what a first day back)
I managed some 100s in the 105-107 range on 1:20 intervals
And on 4 x 200 on 2:40 I was 2;20, 2:18, 2:18 2:16 pretty stoked about that.
The final set of 5 x 100 on 1:20 I punched out tho, was fatigued and had a 3 hr bike to do, so I laid up holding 1:12s ha.
All good. Back at it tomorrow. Got a kink in my neck tho which will make breathing interesting. Hoping it loosens up.

I've been delinquent in my posts this month. Has not been a very good month of swimming, missing usually one workout a week for work and general business. Have not felt good at all doing threshold work. Here's my rest of Feb:
2/6: 3600scy
2x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
24x100 on 1:25 just smooth
4x50 drill
200 swim
2/9: 4500scy
2x[300 swim, 4x50 drill]
3x500 threshold effort
5x100 faster than threshold
4x50 easy
4x[50 build, 25 fast, 25 easy] IM order
5x100 pull hard
6x50 easy
2/12: 2000scy
3x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
8x100 threshold-ish
2/15: 4200scy
2x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
4x100 ankle band
3x800 aerobic. Last 400 more threshold
4x100 pull, 2nd 50 really strong
4x50 easy
2/21:4000scy
2x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
4x[400 pull on 5, 200 kick on 330, 200 swim on 245]
+4.75mi run
2/23: 3700scy
2x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
22x50 i don't remember but kinda looks like every 5th one fast
500 threshold. felt so bad instead of continuing, I changed to:
2x50 easy, then 2x500 pull.
4x50 easy
2/27: 4200scy
2x[200 swim, 4x50 drill]
3x800 aerobic effort
2x400 pull threshold effort
4x50 easy
+ 5 easy treadmill miles
2/28: 2100 scy
200 warmup
4x50 drill
2x50 25 Sprint/25 easy
4x[
4x25 with chute on 45. Holy fuck I hate swimming with the chute, tears my feet up kicking that nylon strap.
50 easy on 60
50 fast on 60
50 easy on 1:15
]
2x[ with red paddles
100 with ankle band on 1:30
50 smooth
50 fast
50 smooth
]
4x25 easy
+ 6.5mi on the trails.
I'm officially on the start list for SwimRun World Championships this year, so that is my total focus all year. Need to be able to run~60k while wet and swim 10k sprinkled in that.

Well, I swam 19x in Feb, and 21x in Jan, for 40x in 60 days. 67% is kind of bullshit. I'll work on 75%+.
I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k.)
I never did Triathlon. (Sue me.)
