Swimming with a Garmin 305

I know it's risky but has anyone swam with their Garmin 305? I've been tempted to try during some sprints but was afraid of cooking the GPS.

Don't do it. It is water resistant...not water proof.

Second that, I wouldn't risk it.

Heard of some folk putting it under their swim cap. Not something I'd do. As noted, it's water resistant, not water proof

I have worn mine twice under my wetsuit in the back pocket of a tri-top. The first time I picked up no GPS signal, the 2nd I picked up 7XX ft worth, so probably walking on the beach with my top off (DeSoto wetsuit). So I have to 2nd the not worth it.

The other thing I have heard is put it in a ziploc bag and pin to tri-top, if you are not wearing a wetsuit.

Works just fine under a swim cap.

I wouldn't bother with doing this for a race, but I did it several times in training and it was no problemo.

I've swum with it once under my swim cap. That works fine.

Do not, under any circumstances, wear it on your wrist.

1) GPS received under 2 feet of water
2) Eventually (and normally in short order) it will leak, and then you
will be sad.

I replaced one that leaked after being ejected from the quick release on
hitting some bad bumps.

I replaced the second one that never suffered trauma, but I couldn't even
rinse it under the sink without water getting in. Had to rinse it to
get sports drink off of it so the buttons would work.

Both replaced under warranty, even though the first one was outside
the warranty window.

Put it in a ziploc bag and then place it under your swim cap on the back of your head. Works perfect but I wouldnt do it for a race. If you got punched in the back of the head...

I was mostly just wondering if anyone (or a bunch of people) had done it without any problems. Garmin says it'll work for 30 minutes in 1 meter of water. Since my arm is not one meter long and the duration of a sprint triathlon swim is much less then 30 minutes I thought it might work. Thanks for all the advice. I don't have the balls to try it anyway.

The standard for which they have the 30 min and one meter rule is an accidental dropping -- swimming with it is different because of the forces applied to the unit while under water and moving through it. That is why they still say it is not covered to swim with.

I ran with mine in the rain and it got water in it and it stopped working. Garmin wanted $100 to fix it since it was out of warrenty. I didn't fix it because in my mind it should have leaked while I was running. I really like the Garmin but it is very limited in what you can do with it.
