Good. My one and only goal was to drop 25-30 pounds in 12 weeks. Was at 205. Not that I was a lazy fatass or anything being almost 6’1” with a muscular frame. I have been really slacking on my cardio over the last couple of years and being almost 54 it got me a little belly and some extra body fat % I’m not happy with. I’m down 18 pounds since I started on January 12th. More cardio, cutting carbs and portion size, zero alcohol. Five more weeks to go to get that 7 to 12 pounds.

I want to get back into 70.3 racing shape. My 40 year old prime 70.3 fighting weight was around 172. Prime 140.6 fighting weight was around 168.

I’ve done pushups everyday.

I started slowly, only doing 3 x 5.

Yesterday (60th day of the year) I did 5 x 12 (60)

I’m going to keep increasing it. Not sure what I’ll get up to, I’m think 5 x 20 in a month or two.

Hit and miss. Some days my mantra holds. I don't worry, I smile and am happy. Other days?.......... The good days are the days when my grandchildren have been involved in my routine.

My goal was 0 days with unhealthy coping skills. # of day I used unhealthy coping skill count

Jan 2024 - 2 days
Feb 2024 - 1 day

compared to last year, same goal
Jan 2023- 1 day
Feb 2023 - available electronic data says from Feb 1-15, I had 1 day with unhealthy skills. I do have the data on paper but it's in OK and I'm in ME. I have it electronically but it's in the womens weekly threads and IDK if rappstar archived those when he cancelled the womens ;-)

CONCLUSION: Performance equal to or better than last Feb for the month of February.

from my Jan check in thread ---

How are you doing?

My 2024 resolution was no days w/ unhealthy coping skills (I'm not going into what these are at the moment). I had 2 days. I think in January of last year I had 0 (I made the same goal. I'm still trying to change the same thing, and I'm annoyed at that, now that I'm writing it and realizing it). But two days also represents 29 days of not using those unhealthy coping skills and on many of those days I had to try REALLY hard.

I read something useful today, which was to the effect of 'the gap [between insight and action] looks much larger than it really is.' That felt helpful and resonated. So, on March 1, look for a thread in which I tell you I had 0 days with unhealthy coping skills.

gosh darn it I really wish I could say I had a totally healthy coping skill month. On April 1 look for my "made it w 0 days using unhealthy skills!" thread on THIS thread, not the April fools one...

I was feeling pretty aimless last year with fitness. I no longer have the time for triathlon, and was feeling unmotivated and frustrated in the gym. I found myself going through the motions of a strength training routine a few times a week but not really progressing and doing a run or two a week with no real goal other than to get outside and do it.

I decided to commit the ultimate fitness faux pas, which is to start CrossFit, and to do it on Jan 1 like an absolute schmuck. I've been fairly consistent with it, aside from two pauses due to illness. Thoughts so far:

As a training modality for general fitness for busy people, it's better than I thought it would be. Our gym (I refuse to call it a box) is very focused on technique and sensible progression. I like how I don't have to think about anything, I just show up and do the work. I like how most of the movements place a heavy bias on posterior chain strength and upper back/shoulder strength and mobility. Workouts have two components: a strength focus and a conditioning focus. The conditioning is very short, high intensity intervals. It's a totally different form of cardio than I was used to with tri and it's very fun/challenging. I'm definitely noticing it in my running, hills feel much easier.

All that being said, as a competitive/spectator sport, I still think CrossFit is absolutely ridiculous. It just looks so silly.

I don't have any particular goals with CF other than do do it consistently for a year, learn new skills and get stronger. Will reassess towards end of 2024.

Long Chile was a silly place.

I don't have "goals" per se, I wanted to continue with BJJ hitting 3-4 classes a week, French twice a week, weights and music practice

Still mostly on track, have had a bad run on the BJJ - can't spar as I thought I had two fractures, turns out it was torn tendons and arthritis. That reduced the weights as well.

Have learnt to kitesurf. So far so good

My plan was just to get on the bike more and get down below 170 and in shape for the upcoming summer. Started out at about 194, 195 and now I am at 174 and would like to actually hit 165.

I’m probably riding anywhere from 120 to 150 miles a week. That is at least until I can get outside and put some real miles in.

Like shit. I've been dealing with this wrist/hand since mid-January and it's messed up everything. Call January and February a waste, except for the Super Bowl and the trip to Austin.

We thought it was a broken scaphoid, its not the pain was joint damage a torn tendons in my thumb.

The answer I should give as to how is bjj. The actual answer is I was in a class and got tripped over doing nothing to do with bjj and I put my hand out on a cage and my thumb / wrist went back and its been bad since mid December

Welcome to the club. I started last May. Agreed that the competitions look a little strange, but I can't argue with the results.

That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying it. And yeah, I'm definitely noticing benefits from it already.

You know the competitions are odd when the people who used to prance around in spandex and piss themselves while riding bikes are making fun of it. The best way I can describe it is "competitive exercising for people with ADHD".

not willing to say what the specific thing I am trying to eradicate is but think things generally like drinking too much, abusing drugs, eating too much, overexercise

if it's a thing you use to deal with feelings that helps in the moment but causes problems in your life overall, that's an unhealthy coping skill, I guess

I just hit my big goal - getting a job. My contract for my last job ended in December so I’ve been looking since the start of the year. I just accepted an offer and start next week. Yay!!

I did dry January and was almost dry for February. I’ve had two glasses of wine since New Years and want to keep the consumption down.

I’m trying to get a handle on how healthy my diet is or isn’t so I’ve started logging my food and tracking my macros - carbs, protein and fat. I’m in perimenopause and want to age healthily and stave off symptoms, diet is a big part of that. Right now I’m just starting and will figure out what next steps are once I have a few weeks of data. I’m also on a wait list to go to a menopause clinic (because my doctor doesn’t want to prescribe HRT), not sure if they’ll want diet data.

My fitness, however, is a dumpster fire! My knees are sore all the time but I’m bad at doing exercises and stretches. I also have two very lazy cats who love napping on me, which does not help me to get off the couch. Yes, I am aware physical activity and exercise are as important as diet for healthy aging!

Here’s proof of Molly and Nessa (27lbs combined) foiling my world domination plans.

Yes. At least collectively / over time. I could maybe make an argument that using the unhealthy skill would provide quicker, temporary/momentary relief from very difficult and terrible feelings. But, developing the healthy skills means those start to provide the same relief... and the healthy skill doesn't compound problems later like the unhealthy ones do. Like the battle in my brain yesterday afternoon was

overwhelming awful unbearable-feeling feelings
wanted to do xxx [unhealthy skill]
reminded self unhealthy skill would make me feel better for a few min, then would make me feel worse by orders of several magnitudes, and would make me feel worse for several days
chose healthy skill
was surprised when healthy skill calmed me down from the feelings feeling unbearable. I still felt shitty, but the immediate "I absolutely cannot tolerate being in my brain and body" feeling dissipated

On track.

My primary goal was 10,000 pullups, 15,000 pushups. I'm tracking well ahead of schedule and enjoying it.
Secondary goals was relocating my running. February was barely passable. March is trending better.
Tertiary goals: Lose weight. Nope. Gained 3.5 pounds (mostly muscle) in Q1...but I look better. I totally failed at 28 days of calisthenics. Between running, lifting, push/pull challenge it was too much for me.

Q2 goals are to focus more on sleep. I need to order a sleep study. And I need to order new blood work to see what's going in internally. Otherwise primary and secondary goals are the focus.

I’m two days into the job and so far it’s going well. All the people I’m going to be supporting are away so I have a chance to do all the on-boarding and learn the basics this week.

My cats aren’t thrilled with me being back at work, but they’ll adjust. :-)

I had an MRI on my knee on Monday, so hopefully I can figure out what’s wrong with it and get it fixed. then I can get into my fitness goals.

The MRI was at 12:30am - I am old and cannot handle late nights anymore!

Nice work! I’m trying to fix my eating habits - and it is so easy to down too much sugar and feel all the regrets (as I am this evening).

I’m mostly tracking macros. How the heck do people eat the recommended amount of protein per day?? Trying to find high protein recipes has inevitably lead me to the Keto corner of the internet. After reading a food blogger’s long-winded apology for his recipe’s unforgivable 9 carbs I decided to have a side of toast with it. That might be my new Insta account - Keto and Toast.

I hope you keep up the good work!

egg / egg whites (depends on how much you care about total calories), greek yogurt (plain fat free if you're trying to minimize calories), cottage cheese (same comment about different fat content if you're trying to minimize calories)

powerbar protein plus bar is 20 g protein/200 calories, which minimizes calories for the protein

lightlife tofu dogs, boca burgers, morningstar grillers - highest protein per calorie meat substitutes

tempeh

if you get natural PB and throw out the excess oil on the top, you up the protein content per calorie and lower the fat content, but that's a good fat

you can mix protein powder into your flat coke

those are my vegetarian sources...

We had a big backlog/long wait list for MRIs so the provincial health authority decided to run the machines 24/7. The upside is that I got an MRI within two months (instead of six-eighteen) of my doctor requesting it. The downside is the potential for 12:30am appointments.

More cardio and less eating. Old school and simple approach. Also zero alcohol but not like I was a big drinker to begin with but that’s still less empty calories.

Me at 205 wasn’t some fatass. I’m almost 6’1” with muscular build. Just hadn’t done much cardio over last couple of years. Certainly carrying some extra pounds and body fat % at 205 but nothing that was ruining my health. I want to get back to that other forum activity and needed to lose weight for that. Running is much easier at 175 than 205.

My wife was like “You can’t lose 30 pounds in three months.” Once again, I’m always right. đźś

Late to the party here.
Finished my medical detox, and I'm officially 7 days sober from alcohol. I feel like an entirely different person.
I've also been battling plantar fasciitis and a bone spur for over a year; got a second cortisone shot in my heel last week as well.
Needless to say, I'm ready to get at it and make some moves.
I'm entering my "bad b*tch era," and my boss is retiring next year, so things are looking up!

Good work. You have a steady strength.

I’m heading into San Diego today for work, and it will be a great adventure. I might take a picture if I see something notable.

Sitting here drinking my coffee, I think I’ve decided to reupholster a chair. I was successful reupholstering one of those long, cushiony ottomans, and now my ex wants to take it to his new place which is okay with me. I need to replace that ottoman I suppose. Anyway, there is an upholstery shop in my town that sells cheap remnants. I have a chair in the garage that I might as well make spiffy. And if I find a suitable ottoman to reupholster, I could make them look pretty, pretty good. A complementary pair, you know?

Tweed. That’s the fabric, I think. My ex is taking the throw pillows too, from this room. I’ll make some complimentary pillows too, by gum! lol Making things is fun!

18 days sober, still going strong. Sobriety is weird, I feel like an entirely different person. Learning to navigate the situations where I'd historically be drinking has been a challenge, but not impossible. Lots of travelling and plans this coming month; hope I can hold onto this so I'm in good shape to go to Zion in a couple weeks.

Good work. Take & share some pictures, please. And be careful of snakes! My girlfriend saw a rattlesnake last weekend in San Diego county, which is probably lower elevation than Zion, but those Zion snakes might be chomping at the bit to go out and do some chomping on your foot. Zion snakes— they sound scary.

1/1 for April, not perfect, a B+ day (hi, perfectionism talking). Resisted the urge to use unhealthy coping skill. Urge wasn’t super strong, which was good. Over time it does go down (not linearly)

I have MAJOR BIG plans to exercise a reasonable amount and get some good sleep and generally kick a*s in May. I’ll probably be, you know, conservative financially.

I'm playing a long game, I missed a week of bjj but it's a ten year process so just need to keep showing up.

On track for just short of 11k pullups
On track for just over 17k pushups
Running reach 100 miles for the first time in a year...it's coming back!
Weight dipped 6 pounds but I went on a week long cruise
Saw the doctor 3x, lots of blood work, just started a new treatment yesterday.
Very optimistic

Very nice!

I had a successful week, too. I still need to do some legal work a few hours today, but I met all my exercise goals last week. I could have done better with rest, but my kids are on board with my proposed schedule for our household, and I think it will be good for all of us. They are being lovely people.

This next week will be a nesting week with my ex, which means he’s responsible for the kids and they’re going to focus on each other. That will give me a bit of a break.
