Hulk is the early clubhouse leader. Tiger is plugging along nicely. This year's field is remarkably uninteresting.

Except that I have $40 riding on a few pics for the first time ever, so I've been following more closely than I have in several years. The extra coverage on ESPN+ that I paid $10.99 for has been welcome as well.
There is a fascinating long format read about Augusta National and the year that Tiger won his 5th Masters. It's behind a paywall that allows one free read so click carefully if you are interested. They work real hard on the tradition part. The field selection is part of that tradition. Stories are made each year and subsequently retold. Hoping my home boy amateur gets to write his story with a positive spin.

Just watched Theegala take 3 pitches from about 15 yards before he got one to stay on the green after spinning his second back off the green. A man of the people right there.

He was definitely the least spritely of the 3 however I just learned he is 84... I would have put him at 78 so I think he is doing pretty good.

Gary has a deal with the devil to look and act that spritely at 88. Jack on the other hand, sad trombone.
Hulk is still hanging in there.

Interesting around the top of the leaderboard. Homa and Morikawa pushing Scheffler. Scheffler with double bogey and bogey, then coming back with an eagle.
Tiger has fallen off a cliff today. Cool to break the record for most cuts made, but he’s clearly out of gas. 10 over par just in today’s round.

Moving day, but the leaders just seem to be moving down then back up.. could be a big shoot out tomorrow. Unless Scheffler birdies 17 and 18 to take a big lead.

DeChambeau has also had a bad day. Looked like he completely lost his feel on the greens, and now he’s getting a little wild off the tee.

That was great! I think he probably played his way out of contention with the 75. The winner most likely will come out of the final pairing. I'm pulling for Morikawa to get the 3rd leg of the career Grand Slam, but I also really like Scottie so I'd be OK with that as well.

Do they only ever have three honorary winners tee it up?
Do they wait for one to pass before bringing in another?
Presumably next in line would be Faldo. Mickelson and Tiger thereafter?

Scheffler is definitely the favorite but if I was a betting man my $ is on either Morikawa or Schauffele.

The tradition of the tournament always lets me know that spring has arrived. The mechanics of their swing, and the science of the equipment make me ready to play again.
But year after year, and 4 days of every commentator gently washing, rinsing, and blow-drying the balls (not golf balls) of the tournament and it’s self-aggrandized aura gets phony after Thursday.
I think that the “patrons” heckling Johnson got exactly what they deserved in 12 gallery. I found his response refreshingly human.

I refer back to an interview with Stewart Copeland
Interviewer: Is it true that you wrote 'Fuck Off' on one of your drums to antagonize Sting?
Copeland: Nahhhh, that's not true. I would never do that
< pause >
Copeland: There were FOUR drums, so I wrote 'Fuck' on one and 'Off' on another, then 'You' and 'Cunt' on the others

I'm hoping this ends the Tiger is going to win nonsense and maybe they can talk about the guys who are actually playing really well.
Scheffler is killing it, Aberg looks like the real deal, Homa, Morikawa, Rory, ... all these guys are actually playing well now and are marketable.

yep, not on that course. Walking wounded during Sundays round would be putting it mildly.
I believe he could still win a regular tour event but so could a lot of older guys. There's no need for him to try to do that at this stage of his career.

They need to move on, but as far as I know, every org involved in golf and promoting it is still for profit. Right now, Tiger in the game makes them significantly more money than not. You can argue that it’s short sighted as Tiger’s playing days might be limited, but he’s still money.
Him coming off the couch and making the cut says more about his game than having a bad weekend.
ETA - they showed him A TON Thursday night’s coverage. I didn’t watch Friday. I don’t recall them taking much about him on the weekend. They were promoting the heck out of the guys you mentioned, especially Aberg.

Yup, Tiger will always be the center of attention when he steps on the teebox because the tour is lacking in star power. Speith, Dustin Johnson, Rory, Rahm, Koepka, all very good players in their own right but pales in comparison. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the next Tiger is his son Charlie.

Picked up a bike rack sticker a few weeks ago at an arts festival. It’s Sasquatch wearing a “Birds Aren’t Real” t-shirt.

I will bet good money that Charlie never earns a tour card. He wasn't even the best 15 year old on his high school team.
I agree that the tour is lacking people viewed as stars but I would suggest that the lack of star power on the tour is as much the tour's and broadcasters' fault as any player. The focus on Tiger, by both, exacerbates the problem. Not resolving the LIV split has made it even worse.
I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Agreed. I enjoyed watching the young European players do so well. Hojgaard was right there as well.
I think the future of golf looks bright. Some people complain that the game isn't the same without the stars of the past, but that's just the nature of sports. Even the OP of this thread complained about the un-interesting field. I was interested :-)

There is one good reason, he would move ahead of Sam Snead and own the record for most PGA tour wins of all time.
