That would be The Sundays. Had to be like 15 years ago, I was in college. I kind of like that version. Not better than the original though.

That's it. Not awful, but distant w/out the soul of Mick. I just heard it twice in last few weeks. Where have I been.

Foo Fighters - "Baker Street", originally done by Gary Rafferty

Also, I really like 311's "Lovesong", originally done by The Cure (good version too though).

Liz Phair doing the theme song for "The Banana Splits" - was on a CD that came out in the mid-'90s with a bunch of alternative bands/singers covering their favorite Saturday morning TV themes.

I also saw Paul Westerberg do an awesome live cover of "Daydream Believer"

Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill (originally Neil Diamond)

Although I like that version, it is not possible for anyone or any group to cover a Neil Diamond song better than the master himself. In fact, it's generally know that all performing artists live in fear that Neil will cover one of their songs and sink them into oblivion.
-------
UB40 did a better job with "Red Red Wine," despite the fact that it's hardly a terrific song (IMO), and Johnny Cash positively owns "Solitary Man." Now that I think about it, Chris Isaak also did a nice job with "Solitary Man," though not as good as Mr. Cash.

One more: "Sweet Jane" is better by the Cowboy Junkies than by Lou Reed.

Another good one from that show was Jordis Unga's version of "The Man Who Sold the World", she made that song her own. Nirvana's cover of Bowie's original was a good one as well.

This one immediatly came to mind:

Rufus Wainwright's version of Beatles/Harrison, "Across the Universe"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H71Fv3PcQQY

The version I downloaded and have on my MP3 player is a slightly different and I prefer it to the YouTube video version above. The one I have is more acoustic and raw.

The Beatles orginal is great to, it's just that I think that Wainwright pulls more out of this.

Huh? The Doors didn't do a version of Gloria, unless I missed it. X did a cover of the Doors Crystal Ship, which rocks. Same for Patty Smith, her version of Gloria kills.
