Can't believe this one hasn't been posted yet (maybe you all hate it), but the Foo Fighters cover of "Darling Nikki" is one of my favorite covers.

Having grown up a big Johnny Cash fan and hearing so many 'One' covers I think we gotta bring it up, my choice is U2's version. Someone may have brought it up already, but the length of this thread didn't motivate me to proof read for U2:)

It's not better than the original, but I heard Cancer Bat's metal cover of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" last night. Kinda cool.

Cowboy Junkies - 2 of them:

Sweet Jane - no offense to Lou Reed, but I've heard Margo sing this a couple of times live, the last of which was in Boston's Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops as a backup band. 'Nuff said.

Powderfinger - old, but good.

Even Lou Reed thinks that the Cowboy Junkies' version is the best.

Very good cover, but I miss Raphael Ravencroft's sax.

Agree, I never really cared for his version but thought that Cowboy Junkies version was much better.

How about CCR's cover of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"?

Good call.

Alan Jackson's cover of The Eagles "Tequila Sunrise" anyone? There were several very good covers on that "Common Thread: Songs of The Eagles" album, but I think Alan Jackson's cover was the only one that was measurably better.

Lori Morgan's "The Sad Cafe" and Suzy Bogguss "Take it to the Limit" from Common Thread were pretty good too.

The entire Carpenters tribute album from the 90s was pretty solid.

The other, of course, involves orcs." John Rogers
