Invariably, the reasons they give are physical, many of which can be alleviated or managed, but the difficulties are always accompanied by the challenge of getting the runner's head in the right space. That usually involves changing the runner's expectations, goals or focus, including shifting the runner's thoughts from how they feel at that moment, to reinforcing how they will feel at later, whether that be when the sun rises, when they cross the finish line, or when reflecting on their race the afterwards.
