Post-race interview he said he thought a pole was the flexy kind, but it was rigid. He does tend to push the limits in brushing those things.
He also said he had bad legs - that at the time he went down he was trying to figure out how to win without complete confidence. Might be the pretend modesty that superstars have, but despite the thermobiblical climbs it does check out that he appeared to be lacking a percent or two.
Vanthourenhout gets the award for most crafty racing - hitching his wagon to Pidcock to make it to the front, then switching the wagon to WvA when Piddles petered out. Not sure what happened to Piddles - he went in for a bike change from the front - possible flat - and then just kind of shut down.
